'I remember lying on my bed the night before my Trent Bridge debut luxuriating, steadily making my way through a pack of Winnie Blues, nibbling on the extraordinary puffed potato of my monster munch, and sipping on a tin of Carling. The Bill was on TV (for me still the greatest police drama of all time - give me PC Reg Hollis over Detective Jimmy McNulty anyday) which was a year ahead of the episodes we had back home. I thought F*** me swinging Shane, you've made it mate. I felt inescapably content, even the sight of Slats on the twin bed next to mine, playing the boardgame Mousetrap by himself couldn't diminish my buzz.

I knew greatness was in the offing. And how right I was. I strolled out the next day, and with my first ball in International cricket ended Mike Gatting's career, and wrote the first line of a legend. The legend of Shane Warne'.
